Abu Adonaba
Abu Adonaba is from Ghana in West Africa. He was born in the capital city of
Accra and grew up in a village in Northern Ghana. He grew up with rythms and dance, and
developed an early interest for music.
At the age of twelve he moved back to Accra and started in the dance group
Adam Naabi, where he quickly distinguished himself with his talent for music and dance. At
the age of 20 he was employed as a danser in the national Ghana Dance Ensemble, University of
Ghana, Legon. He participated actively as creater, coreograph, danser and solo artist in a
series of productions.
In 1995 he began as a principal dancer in the Odehe Dance Company,
a price-winning dancing and drumming group in Ghana. He featured in different performances
and dance/drama productions.
Abu toured with the Odehe Dance Company in Germany in the summer of 2001.
Abu has many years of experience as a dance instructor. From 1990 onwards he
started to teach dance at primary schools in Ghana. While dancing in the Ghana Dance Ensemble
he tought Ghanaian and international students dance at the Universiy, institute for African
studies. He was later a dance instructor at the Odehe Centre, a drumming and dancing centre in
Ghana.
Since 1998 Abu had lived in Bergen, Norway, teaching and performing at festivals,
schools, kindergardens and various companies. He gives weekly dance and
drumming courses in and around Bergen, and arranges several
weekend workshops a year.
Abu adjusts his classes to the level of his students, and gives individual
instuctions during courses. He teaches dance and rythms with roots in the traditional culture.
His teaching methodes combine knowledge of rythms and movements, mixed with humor and a sense of parody, as well as great
enthusiasm.
"As a dance instructor, he is both patient and thorough. He can be trusted
to produce the right interpretations in African Traditional Dance forms,
not only of Ghana, but those from West, East and South Africa."
Professor A. Mawere-Opoku; Prof. in African traditional
dance and founder of the Ghana Dance Ensemble.
